Where to Stay in Sabah: How Kota Kinabalu, Tanjung Aru and Semporna Divide Up

Where to stay in Sabah: Kota Kinabalu as a city base, Tanjung Aru and the five islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, and why Semporna is a separate leg rather than a day trip.

Kota Kinabalu: the practical base for a mixed Sabah itinerary

Kota Kinabalu, widely abbreviated as KK, stands on the West Coast of Sabah and is the state capital. Sabah Tourism Board describes it as a modern city with international-standard hotels and resorts. It is also a gateway to Mount Kinabalu—one of Southeast Asia’s tallest mountains—and to the rest of Sabah, making it relevant both to city-based travellers and those continuing further inland.

Getting around and out of KK is supported by taxis, buses, trains and e-hailing services. The official attraction list covers a broad mix of islands and beaches, museums and art galleries, cultural villages, local markets and notable landmarks. Named places include Tanjung Aru Beach, Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Jesselton Point Waterfront, KK Central Market, Gaya Street (Sunday Market), and Sabah State Museum & Heritage Village. The city also offers a wide selection of food.

This makes KK the clearer choice for an itinerary that combines urban sightseeing with selected coastal or marine excursions. A traveller can build days around markets, museums, heritage sites and food while retaining access to the offshore park. If Mount Kinabalu or another part of Sabah is part of the trip, KK also functions as the departure base rather than simply a resort stop.

Tanjung Aru Beach, written in the official material as “Tanjung Aru Beach,” belongs in the first category: it is listed among KK’s nearby attractions. Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is described separately as an offshore conservation reserve made up of five islands. Tanjung Aru should therefore not be treated as one of the park islands or as a substitute for the park’s island-transfer arrangements.

Tanjung Aru and Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

The Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is a protected marine conservation reserve off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. Governed by Sabah Parks, it encompasses five distinct islands: Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug.

The islands are not described as having the same degree of development. Sulug remains quiet and undeveloped to protect its natural ecological state. Gaya, Sapi, Manukan and Mamutik have established facilities for both day visitors and overnight guests. The surrounding shallow fringing reefs and clear bays are used for activities including snorkelling, scuba diving, sea kayaking, parasailing and beachside picnics. The park is therefore a destination in its own right when marine recreation is central to the trip, rather than merely an extension of a city itinerary.

Accommodation within the park ranges from luxury eco-resorts to managed island chalets. Across all five islands, however, the booking rule is uniform: prior reservations directly with property operators are required for every overnight stay. Travellers should plan the stay as an island reservation first, rather than relying on a city-based booking process.

Boat transfers and island-hopping itineraries operate daily from three main jetties in Kota Kinabalu:

  • Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal
  • DBKK Jetty
  • Sutera Harbour Marina Jetty

The choice of jetty is a practical part of the trip, not a minor detail to leave until arrival. Scuba excursions require a separate planning step: visitors should book in advance with licensed local dive operators to secure equipment availability and a structured dive itinerary.

For a marine-focused holiday, these details give the Tanjung Aru–Tunku Abdul Rahman combination a clear role. Tanjung Aru anchors the city-side destination, while the marine park supplies the offshore experience. Confusing the two can produce the wrong accommodation and transfer plan.

Semporna: a separate gateway for island and dive travel

Semporna lies on Sabah’s South-Eastern Coast and is the capital of Semporna District. Sabah Tourism Board calls it the gateway to Sabah’s “dive haven”, which reflects a destination identity quite different from the urban attractions around KK.

The usual arrival route described by the official district page begins with a flight to Tawau Airport, followed by a booked airport taxi to Semporna town. The stated distance is 81.7 kilometres from Tawau town; it is a distance rather than a quoted driving time. A coach bus service from Kota Kinabalu is the alternative route identified by the same page. Neither description should be treated as a current timetable, so flight, taxi and coach connections need to be checked for the intended travel date.

The official list of places associated with Semporna is broad: Maglami-lami Water House, Tun Sakaran Museum, Bohey Dulang, Kapalai Island, Sipadan Island, Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Pom Pom Island, Mataking Island and Mabul Island. This is a destination set rather than evidence that every place belongs in one combined boat itinerary.

The destination’s wider positioning is also reflected in Tourism Malaysia’s Explore Sabah campaign, unveiled on 25 June 2025 to promote more than 400 curated experiences across the state. Island hopping and diving in Semporna were explicitly highlighted. The campaign reinforces the case for planning Semporna as a regional itinerary of its own, with its own arrival and excursion structure, rather than simply attaching an offshore day to a KK stay.

Why the city and island plans are not substitutes

The two main ways of travelling through Sabah have different tempos.

A city-based itinerary can move among markets, museums, heritage places, landmarks, beaches and restaurants, using KK’s listed taxis, buses, trains and e-hailing services. Its structure is suited to travellers who want several different kinds of experience within one destination.

An island-based itinerary is organised around marine access. In Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, that means daily boat and island-hopping operations, a specific departure jetty and, for an overnight visit, accommodation arranged directly with the island property. In Semporna, the planning structure includes a Tawau flight and taxi journey or a coach from KK, followed by activity planning around the destination’s marine attractions.

Cost division matters as much as geography. A city-based trip should account for accommodation, movement through KK and any separately selected park excursion. An overnight park stay adds a directly booked island property and requires confirmation of how the boat transfer fits the reservation. For Semporna, the comparison should begin with the air-and-taxi route against the coach alternative, then add the chosen accommodation and excursions.

The useful comparison is therefore the total transfer chain, not simply the room rate or the word “resort”. Neither KK nor Semporna can be labelled universally cheaper without current quotes. A lower-priced stay also does not answer whether boat transfers, guide services or dive equipment are included.

Choose KK when the city and its nearby attractions are central to the trip. Choose the marine park or Semporna when the holiday should be defined by offshore access and island activities. The two modes complement a larger Sabah journey, but they do not reproduce the same experience or logistics.

Booking and connection checks

Before confirming any Sabah itinerary, work through these points:

  • Choose the correct geographical category. Tanjung Aru Beach is an attraction in KK’s surrounding area; it is not interchangeable with a stay on one of the five islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.
  • Reserve island accommodation directly. Prior direct reservations with property operators are required for all overnight stays across the marine park.
  • Confirm the departure point. Establish whether the journey uses Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal, DBKK Jetty or Sutera Harbour Marina Jetty. The official information says boat transfers and island-hopping operate daily, but a daily operation is not a guarantee of a particular departure time.
  • Plan diving separately. Book in advance with a licensed local dive operator and confirm the equipment and structured itinerary.
  • Use the official verification channels. The Sabah Tourism Board homepage includes “Licensed Tour Agency under MOTAC” and “Licensed Accommodations”. These are the relevant channels to consult when checking a named travel agency or accommodation. The marine park itself is governed by Sabah Parks.
  • Build the Semporna connection from the chosen route. Confirm whether the plan uses Tawau Airport and a booked taxi or the coach from KK. The 81.7-kilometre figure describes the relationship between Semporna town and Tawau town, not a journey duration.
  • Request a written, itemised confirmation. Check the current itinerary, inclusions, exclusions and terms for accommodation, transfers, boat journeys and activities. Do not assume that a destination list, a daily operating statement or an overnight reservation automatically establishes a particular connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Sapi and Mamutik suitable for children or beginner snorkellers?

The official park page specifically identifies both islands as suitable for families with children and beginner snorkellers because of their gentle currents. This provides a direct official comparison when choosing an island day.

Which island is the largest, and which operators are named for accommodation?

Gaya Island is the largest in the archipelago. ECHO Resorts operates Gayana Marine Resort and Bunga Raya Island Resort, while YTL Hotels operates Gaya Island Resort. Manukan has beachside chalets and facilities operated by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges.

What does the PADI 5-Star reference mean for a Mamutik guest?

Mamutik Island Lodge, operated by Borneo Divers, has an on-site PADI 5-Star Dive Centre. The official page also lists guided dive packages and certification courses, so guests should ask the operator which format applies to their trip.

Does the Explore Sabah campaign describe one complete Semporna itinerary?

Tourism Malaysia’s 25 June 2025 campaign promotes more than 400 curated experiences and explicitly highlights island hopping and diving in Semporna. It establishes an official product theme, not a combined route or schedule for every destination in the district list.

Why does “KK” appear in transport and booking information?

Locals often refer to Kota Kinabalu simply as “KK”. Using both the full city name and the abbreviation can make it clearer when comparing transport services or confirming an accommodation location.
