Choose a Mauritius coastline before choosing a hotel. The tourism board's beach guide describes a livelier north with restaurants and bars, an east of long beaches and lagoons, a south of cliffs and wilder shores, and a west associated with sunsets and water activities. None is universally best. A traveller who wants dinner outside the resort needs a different base from one who intends to spend most days on the sand in front of the property.
North: dining options and trips to offshore islands
The official guide associates the north with a busier restaurant and bar scene and with boat trips to the northern islets. If you expect to eat away from the hotel or plan an island excursion, compare properties around the northern coast and Grand Baie. Check each hotel's exact address before assuming restaurants or a departure point are within walking distance. A broad regional label cannot tell you what is beside a particular resort at night.
East: long beaches, lagoons and Île aux Cerfs
The tourism authority describes the east as home to some of the island's longer beaches and clear lagoons; Belle Mare is one of the named beach areas. It also points to boat trips to Île aux Cerfs for a beach day or golf. Start here if long beach days matter most. If Île aux Cerfs is central to the holiday, compare the journey from your hotel to the actual boat departure point, rather than judging convenience by a map alone. The east can be breezy, so check water conditions and activity operations for your travel dates.
West and Le Morne: sunsets or water sports
The tourism board links the west to sunsets, snorkelling and diving. Flic en Flac is a long west-coast beach, while Le Morne in the southwest is associated with mountain scenery and kitesurfing. If sunset is your priority, inspect the orientation of the room and the view from shared spaces; a west-coast address does not guarantee an unobstructed view from every room. For water sports, confirm the operator's location, qualifications and conditions for the day rather than treating a regional description as a safety promise.
South: dramatic coast, with a swimming check
The official beach guide describes southern Mauritius through rocky shores, cliffs, hidden bays and wilder beaches. It also cautions that currents and coral reefs matter in the water. Choose this side if the landscape and trips beyond the hotel appeal to you. If convenient swimming directly in front of your accommodation is essential, ask the specific hotel where guests can enter the water and what pools or other options are available. Photographs cannot answer that question.
Match season to the activities you will use
Mauritius Now calls the island a year-round destination. Its weather guide defines summer as November to April and winter as May to October, with average daytime coastal temperatures of about 28–33°C in summer and 22–28°C in winter. These are seasonal averages, not a forecast for your week. When swimming, diving, kitesurfing or boat excursions are the reason for the trip, check your dates, the operator's conditions and an alternative plan before committing to a room.
Narrow the search to two hotels
Write down the two activities you will do most often: eating out, spending long days on a beach, watching sunset, golfing or exploring a wilder coast. Use the regional distinctions above to shortlist two coastlines, then compare one hotel in each. Check the exact booked room, view, walking route to the beach, meal terms and airport transfer. This makes the trade-offs clearer than sorting an island-wide hotel list by brand alone.
Travelling with children? Confirm the property's age and occupancy policy, beach and pool facilities, and actual swimming guidance. A coastline's overall character cannot stand in for a hotel's rules.
Must I stay on the east coast to visit Île aux Cerfs? No. The east is a useful starting point for comparison, but the right plan depends on the boat operator, departure point and transfers you choose.
Is winter unsuitable for the sea? The tourism authority presents Mauritius as a year-round destination. Whether a particular water activity operates on your dates depends on conditions and the operator.
