How to Choose a Five-Star Resort: Six Hard Criteria After You Set the Budget

A six-criterion checklist for choosing a five-star resort: room size and layout, pool and beach access, childcare bands, island transfers, rate and cancellation terms, and official accreditation.

Published

1. Room Type, Starting Area and Pool Configuration

Begin with the official room inventory and preserve its exact wording. The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya, Yalong Bay overview lists 446 well-appointed, over-sized guestrooms at over 65 sqm, 42 rooms and suites on Club Level, 19 suites, and 33 private villas with individual plunge pools. Its rooms page adds that the 33 villas have private patios, plunge pools and butler service.

Do not assume these inventory groups are additive, or that either suite category has two bedrooms: the cited descriptions give no bedroom count. For a two-bedroom requirement, request the property’s category sheet or floor plan and ask which category carries that label, which published area applies and whether its pool belongs to that room type.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands provides a contrasting specification: each villa is described as having water views, an infinity pool, a sundeck and the attention of an Aris Meeha personal butler. Preserve those distinctions. A “suite”, an “infinity pool” and an “individual plunge pool” are not interchangeable room or pool benefits, and none should be added to a quotation without confirmation.

2. Pool Access and the Route to the Beach

Draw two route lines for every shortlisted property: from the booked room category to a named pool, and from that room category to a named beach access point.

The Sanya overview specifies 5 swimming pools, but the cited page provides no room-to-pool or room-to-beach distance. A pool count therefore establishes inventory, not walkability. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island offers different evidence: 3 private boardwalks provide guest access to a quarter mile of oceanfront. The same page separately states that rentals at Center Beach are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; that is a rental window, not a stated beach-access schedule.

Ask for a written route from the actual room category to each relevant pool and beach entry. It should name the boardwalk or path used, give any published distance and identify access constraints. A water view belongs in the room record and should not be silently converted into a claim about the walk to the water.

3. Children and Older Travellers

Childcare requires a service-by-service check rather than an inference from the phrase “kids’ club”. Start with the published age band. Club Med’s Petit Club Med page covers children aged 2 to 3. Mini Club Med+ is for children from 4 to 10 years old and is included in their package. Four Seasons Orlando’s Kids for All Seasons is a supervised club for children ages 4 to 12. Quote those ranges exactly, then ask for the supervision, session schedule and booking method attached to the actual stay.

Keep the schedule, meals and evening care in separate fields. The Mini Club Med+ inclusion is expressly package-specific. The Pajama Club page describes toddler activities and bedtime stories under expert supervision, plus a separately bookable babysitting service offering one-on-one attention. At Amelia Island, Kids’ Night Out is for children ages 5-12 and is available from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; it does not establish all-day childcare.

Food arrangements also need their own terms. Four Seasons states that a meal from its kids menu is available for an additional cost. At Club Med, the Baby Corner offers bite-sized items alongside bottle warmers and blenders, while the Baby Restaurant provides dishes and space to dine with parents or friends from Petit Club Med. Ask what care, food and bookings include, and what each costs separately.

For an older traveller, do not borrow a children’s-program description. Request the same specificity about the room-to-pool and beach routes, meal arrangements and the final transfer segment.

4. Island Transport and the Last Leg

Treat island travel as a chain, not a single transfer. Sabah Tourism Board says boat transfers and island-hopping itineraries operate daily across the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal, DBKK Jetty and Sutera Harbour Marina Jetty in Kota Kinabalu. The same page says prior reservations directly with property operators are required for all overnight stays across the islands. This describes the transport network and reservation channel, not the route from a particular guest’s arrival point to a particular hotel.

For Semporna, Sabah Tourism Board says visitors usually fly to Tawau airport and book an airport taxi to Semporna town, which is 81.7 kilometers from Tawau town; coach service from Kota Kinabalu City is an alternative. In the Maldives, one published package includes return luxury shared transfers.

Ask each property to identify the pickup point, transport mode, shared or private arrangement, final movement from jetty or airport to the hotel, and the wording used in the booking confirmation. “Daily”, “shared” and “included” each answer only part of the itinerary.

5. Rates, Cancellation and Upgrade Conditions

Keep rate labels, date rules and package benefits in separate fields. The Sanya booking engine displays “Flexible in Specific Dates / Flexible Dates”, “Cancel”, “Special Rates”, “Lowest Regular Rate”, “Special Rates/points”, “Corp/Promo Code” and “Marriott Bonvoy Points”. For the selected plan, ask which dates it permits, what action and deadline govern cancellation, what charge follows and whether any amount is returned, and which components are included.

The Maldives package page combines half-board dining with return luxury shared transfers and states, “Book by September 30, 2026.” Keep that cutoff attached to the package record, including its transfer benefit, rather than assuming the same inclusion belongs to another rate.

At Sanya, the rooms page says, “You can access the Club Level as you reserve our Treat You package now.” Obtain the exact booking condition and confirmed benefit in writing. Club Level access should remain distinct from a different room category unless the property expressly confirms one.

6. Accreditation, Destination Authority and Claim Scope

Accreditation, destination management and environmental wording need separate records. The Provincial Government of Aklan’s official accommodation page is headed “List of DOT Accredited Accommodation Establishments in Boracay Island as of July 4, 2024”. Match the exact property name and its listed area—such as Station 1, Station 3 or Boracay Newcoast—and retain the list date with the booking notes.

Credentials can concern a defined category rather than general hotel status. DOST-Aklan and DOT-6 hosted a public Halal-tourism training for 20 DOT-accredited accommodation establishments and discussed amended guidelines governing the operation and recognition of Muslim-Friendly accommodation establishments. The training is not itself recognition of a named resort; request any property-specific document, its scope and its date.

For destination authority, Sabah Tourism Board describes Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park as a protected marine conservation reserve governed by Sabah Parks. Its page names Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug, while distinguishing Sulug as quiet and undeveloped and the other four as having facilities for day visitors and overnight guests. Conservation wording should reach the same level of precision: identify the managing body, the entity making the claim and the exact area covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “24-hour” butler service mean 24-hour childcare?
No, not by itself. The Maldives package uses “24-hour Aris Meeha” and dedicated island butler service, while the childcare examples define separate age bands, supervision and activities. Ask who cares for the child, the applicable age band and the exact session times.

Does daily boat operation mean my hotel transfer is included?
No. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park page says services operate daily from its jetties, but it does not attach them to a property package. Ask the property confirmation to identify the included pickup, transport mode, sharing arrangement and final leg.

Does an extra-cost kids menu reveal whether a club is included?
No. Four Seasons states only that a meal from the kids menu is available for an additional cost. Obtain the club’s age, session, booking and fee terms separately.

Does protected marine-park status certify a resort’s sustainability?
No. Sabah Parks governs Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, which is a destination-level description rather than an operator-level credential. Ask which named resort, island or management body supports a specific environmental claim.

Does an official accommodation list create a general quality ranking?
No. The Aklan page is a dated list of DOT-accredited establishments, not a scorecard. Use it to check the exact recorded property and area, not to infer service consistency or a separate credential.
